ISO 13485 Quality Manual

A quality manual is a high-level definition of a quality management system of your company. It is similar to an expanded mission or vision statement. Quality manual establishes the policy-level position of your management in the area of quality management system (QMS) and compliance with applicable regulations. There are two definitions of what a quality manual for an ISO 13485 QMS should be:

ISO 10013, Guidelines for Developing Quality Manuals, element 4.2, gives detailed suggestions for creating a quality manual. It defines a quality manual, among other requirements, as a document that should "consist of, or refer to, the documented quality system procedures intended for planning and administration of activities which impact on quality". ISO 13485:2003, element 4.2.2 requires a quality manual to include:

1 - the scope of the QMS

2 - description of processes that are excluded, including non-applicable elements;

3 - references to the documented procedures;

4 - relationships between the processes of your quality management system.

5 - definition of the QMS structure

Most companies I worked with, stated the scope of their quality management system in a scope or introduction sections of their manuals, similar to these: "ABC Nephrology, Inc. designs, manufactures, distributes and services dialysis equipment and accessories"

Now, after we established the scope of our ISO 13485:2003 QMS, we need to describe the processes we use to achieve the results stated in our scope. While we are doing this, we need to remember to reference corresponding procedures. Per my experience, the easiest way to do it is to transform the standard from a list of requirements into your organization's dedication to satisfy those requirements. For example: Element 5.5.2.c of ISO 13485:2003 requires a Management Representative to ensure "? promotion of awareness regulatory and customer requirements ?" our manual will affirm: "The Management Representative ensures that regulatory and customer requirements are clearly communicated throughout the organization per the Purchasing Procedure and Regulatory Compliance Procedure."

Following this simple method, we can address all the requirements of ISO 13485:2003 standard and reference procedures supporting corresponding elements of your manual and quality management system. So we will comply with two three requirements of the standard.

Interaction between the processes may be documented in a number of ways. Some companies choose to define interaction of the top level processes by using variations of Figure 1 in ISO 9001:2000. Combining such a diagram with references to procedures, will define interactions between your processes. For more detailed process interaction tools, type "process interaction matrix" into your browser and you will find numerous examples.

The only requirement of the element 4.2.2 left is to describe the structure of your documentation. Some businesses I have consulted described their documentation tree as 4- or 5-level structure in the documentation management section of the manual.

Now, when we addressed the requirements of ISO 13485:2003 standard for quality manual, consider this. A quality manual may become a strong marketing tool. It can tell your potential clients and vendors that your organization is not only a quality-conscious organization, but that it also realizes benefits of a well documented commitment to quality and compliance with regs.

I always wonder what companies achieve by stamping their quality manuals in bold capitol red letters "CONFIDENTIAL". As far as I am concerned, a quality manual is a company's resume for quality, and if you hide your resume, there is a very good chance that you will never get a job! Without this human intervention there could be hoards of warped and stretched designs being sewn onto garments and just sent out to customers without further thought. This would waste time, money and the materials used in the process.

After the checks to ensure the digitising went well are carried out the digitised design can be transferred to a machine ready to be sewn onto the fabric. Any designs that have been warped during digitising will need to be processed by hand to be returned to their original state. Next for the sewing machine comes the process of reading the image and the pattern that was formulated from it. The way these patterns are put together sometimes means that the design doesn't look anything like it should do until it's finished, due to the layers of thread and different shaped and colours that need to coincide. Because the pattern was derived from the original image you can rest assured that it looks perfect at the end.

The only interruption in the process comes when the colour of threads or the strength of needles need to be changed by a human, rather than by the machine itself. As a result, customers usually have to wait between one and two days for their designs to be sewn on from when their image reached the embroidery company's manufacturer. Each design only needs to be digitised once because it gets stored on the memories of both the sewing machine and the computer, making multiple copies of one design very easy to process. As a result, the time taken to embroider the same image on a whole boxful of garments is considerably less than it is for even just half a box of different designs.

Small Business Trade Show Displays - Buy Or Rent?

When small, newly emerging companies start looking at buying booth space at trade shows, they inevitably consider the option of buying or renting trade show displays. As with any endeavor, there are pros and cons for both and what a business decides to do will largely depend on their needs.

The first thing a new company has to consider is its size and what it can reasonable afford in this regard.

For example, if you are a two man operation that has just begun showing a moderate profit; spending a ton of money on a huge trade show display would be foolhardy. In such a case, rental may be the best and wisest option.

To put it in perspective, here are a few things you should look at when trying to figure out the feasibility of buying versus renting a trade show display.

1. How often will I use this display -- if you plan to be a frequent participant at a particular trade show then buying the exhibit would be a smart move. However, if it is a one time deal, then buying the display won't make sense, as the cost of purchasing the showcase far exceeds the cost of renting it for a few days. 2. Advertising and marketing budget - many businesses have an annual allotment of funds that is set aside for marketing. Keeping this in mind, one should evaluate how buying the display would be beneficial in the long term. Certain types of businesses fare much better in a trade show atmosphere than others making the purchase worthwhile. Assess how the purchase of a trade show display would help your company in the end. 3. Other trade show considerations - funds are limited within a smaller company, which is why money will have to be distributed so that it is applied into more than one area. If most of it goes towards the purchase of the display booth, you'll have very little left for what will go inside of it. 4. Upkeep and storage -- buying a booth display means having it keep it somewhere. You can opt to store in your garage but there is always the chance the thing can get mangled between shows. When you rent, you don't have to worry over such things, in fact, many trade show officials take care of putting the display up and taking it down at no extra cost. 5. Expansion and changes can be easily made -- when you buy tradeshow displays very little can be done to upgrade it without tremendous cost. On the flipside, renting affords a business the opportunity to make changes if necessary. These changes can encompass anything, from making your showcase even larger to adding new and appealing attractions to the booth itself. Either way, you really don't want to be restricted when it comes to making your display the best it can possibly be.

Really, the skies the limit when one opts to rent as opposed to buy a trade show display. When it comes to marketing, a new business should have to the ability to be progressive and explore new and interesting concepts.

Now, there are some who argue that a bought display allows them to commit to one recognizable idea that people will begin to remember. Although a valid argument, one could point out that even major, well known product icons had to be overhauled as time went on. As society changes, so does its tastes in the things that it likes aesthetically and idealistically.

A company that doesn't keep this in mind is quickly left behind.

In the end, using trade show display rentals is the smartest choice for any fledgling company. Nicks Waterfall House

In the Heart of the New York Catskill Mountains, there is a place called Nicks Waterfall House. I have been there many times and it has become one of my favorite places of all time to ride to.

There are times when the stress of our lives and jobs can get even the best of us a little down. If you are a straight lace citizen you go to a Doctor and get some pills or maybe see a shrink. If you are a Biker you hop on your Motorcycle get the motor running and you head out to a place like Nicks Waterfall House.

It does not matter where you are or what direction you come from. The ride threw the NY Catskill Mountains is going to relax the stress away from the depths of your very soul. As you ride to Nick's threw long winding roads up over and into the heart of some of the worlds most majestic Mountains, with the Sun shining down on you and the fresh Mountain air filling your lungs you will start to get a feeling of what one can only describe as pure joy.

As you get near Nicks Waterfall House located on Route 990v, Gilboa New York 12076, either alone or with a group of friends. You will feel as if time and space are no longer a factor in the Universe, and it only gets better from there! As you ride in the first thing many think is they have reached some old time lost resort, but have no fear Nicks is a Biker bar.

When you walk threw the front door you will no longer have any doubts you have arrived at the right place. If Nick is not there to great you himself, there is a good chance he is in his large kitchen cooking up some classic Biker grub. I recommend the first thing you do is order an Ice Cold Beer and go sit by the large windows over looking a Waterfall that looks as if it was stolen from the year 1492. If there is any stress or negative emotions left in your body after the ride to the Waterfall House after only a few minutes watching the water fall down and roll over the rocks it will soon have all washed down stream.

Then it is time to meet the locals, grab another Beer and maybe some of that great food (My favorite is the Waterfall House Cheeseburgers) or maybe shoot a game of pool. The crowd at Nicks is a mix of friendly Bikers, locals and good ole boys. This is a place to exchange stories and Adventures from the road. Often the sharing of stories can go on for hours.

It is easy to have what some may call too much fun at Nicks Waterfall House but with rooms up stairs starting at only $25 a night, there is no reason to worry! Now I want to make sure that you know when I tell you there are rooms at Nicks you understand these rooms where created for road weary bikers. If you bring your old lady with you make sure she is a real biker Chick because Nicks is no Yuppie bed and breakfast! It is a real bikers, biker bar and what you get when you rent a room from Nicks is a communal living room a bed to sleep in and a shower to wash off the road dust! One other thing you get from a night at Nicks is a renewed Spirit of Adventure and a willingness to face what ever maybe up around the next bend in your life!

I have many local Bars that I think of as home and I love to go to and cut loose, but when I hear that call of the road it is often telling me it is time to go to Nick's Waterfall House!!!

Set specific marketing goals. Before you start, think about what you want your marketing campaign to accomplish. Most marketers focus on conversion but you need to define what that means for you and your campaign. Some marketers are looking for a sale while others are looking for a download. Before you get started, consider what action you want your respondents or visitors to take and how you are going to measure the result.

Segment your market carefully. Do not try to market to everyone. Choose a specific segment and focus your energies there. If you do, your campaign will be more successful. Considering the specific audience you are looking to attract and focusing on them, you can increase your chances of success tremendously. Review your current customer and find others like them if you wish to generate a positive return on investment.

Identify key messages points. What are the messages that resonate with your audience? Have you used headlines or email subject lines that have performed extremely well in the past? If so, use them to create a baseline and try to improve in later campaigns. You need to speak in the language that resonates with your customers if you are going to grab their attention and gain their trust.

Test multiple offers. The only way to run a productive marketing campaign is by testing various offers. Your offer is a critical component for improving marketing results. Your best bet is to test multiple offers and measuring the result. Once you find and offer that works, try to beat its results during the next campaign.

Use integrated marketing. To get the most from your marketing campaign, do not rely on a single email, advertisement, or post card. Think about and select the media that your segment uses to get information on a regular basis and purchase the products and services they want. This method can help you determine the best way to reach them. Once you have develop a marketing campaign, utilize as many of these media types as you can to convey your message and offer.

I have found that using these techniques are paramount to producing a favorable return on your marketing investment. In addition be mindful of campaign timing. Even if all of the above criteria are met, your campaign may still fall flat if you have not exposed your audience to the right message at the right time.

Consider each of these steps before creating your next marketing campaign in print or online. Your marketing is only going to be successful when you set specific goals, segment your market appropriately, use effective messaging, and create a compelling offer. Experiment with different media to get your message across and deliver a winning marketing campaign.

MLM Basics - The Multi Level Marketing Business Model

MLM, or Multi Level Marketing, when combined with the Internet, creates a powerful formula for creating a successful home business and achieving financial freedom.

There are literally hundreds of companies which use this business model to move their products from production to the end user and my goal in this article is to provide you with the simple facts on what this industry IS and what it is NOT!

I want to give you everything you need to make an informed, educated decision about whether or not this business concept is right for you.

Simply put, MLM (as we'll call it here) is simply a business system for moving products and services from the factory to the marketplace and using a multi level commission payout plan (that's where the term "Multi Level" comes in)! Another term commonly associated with MLM is Network Marketing due to the nature of the program members working together as a team.

Unfortunately, many people do not understand how multi level marketing programs work and believe that they are some sort of scam or illegal pyramid scheme. Nothing could be further from the truth for legitimate MLM companies.

The first thing that you need to know is that MLM is not illegal and it is not a pyramid scheme. While the organizational structure resembles a pyramid in shape, this is true of almost all businesses. There are far more workers in the lower ranks of any business then at the top, if not, the business would collapse. Not everyone in the company can be CEO or Vice President. If fact, Multi Level Marketing companies are one hundred percent legal and many multi-million dollar companies use this business model to market their products.

Some well known Multi Level Marketing companies include Herbalife, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Shaklee, Amway, Tupperware, Princess house (a subsidiary of Colgate Palmolive), A. L. Williams (Insurance), Melaleuca, U.S. Sprint, MCI, and NSA. Companies such as these have been around for decades.

There are hundreds more MLM companies and just like other companies, some are good and some are not so good. But MLM is certainly here to stay and it is an explosive growth field! In fact, increasingly you will find more and more Fortune 500 companies employing the Network Marketing business model for some portion of their marketing portfolio!

So why are MLM companies and programs becoming so popular? Well, the business model offers a wonderful opportunity for the "little guy" to start his own business on a part time basis with very little investment money upfront, but with a large income potential if she or he is willing to put in some work! Contrary to what some people would want you to believe, MLM is certainly not a get rich quick scheme and requires effort to grow your business.

John Paul Getty is often quoted as having said that he would always prefer earning 1% of a hundred peoples efforts than 100% of his own efforts. And that is precisely what Multi Level Marketing is all about. The Multi Level Marketing sales force members are not actually employees of the company, but instead they are independent distributors who are compensated for their efforts by commission based on the amount of product moved by not only themselves, but also by those whom they recruit as distributors.

As each distributor recruits others to become distributors, they create what is known as a downline and in addition to their own retail sales commissions, they earn a wholesale commission on the amount of products their downline distributors move to consumers. This process goes on for some designated number of levels and is where the term "multi level" originates.

The more people a distributor can recruit for his downline, the larger will be their total commissions. The number of levels that a distributor will earn override commissions on will depend upon the company's compensation plan but five to seven or more levels is not unusual. These wholesale override commissions can quickly add up for distributors with a large downline.

Thus, there is a strong incentive for a distributor to not only recruit more distributors below them, but to also train them and retain them as part of his or her downline. So a successful distributor must be able to duplicate their success in their downline members.

In addition to selling products directly, recruiting, training, and retaining others becomes the key to earning a large stable residual income with Multi Level Marketing. It is not easy, but it is very rewarding.

In fact, millions of people are earning a solid income from the comfort of their own home while being their own boss. With MLM, you don't need an expensive office anymore. A telephone, basic computer, fax machine, a HUGE ambition, and the knowledge of how to proceed to grow your business are all it really takes!
